Middle school is an excellent time to stress the importance of being respectful as students learn how they relate to everything and everybody. Socially, middle school students are still figuring out how to interact with the world around them and need guidance on how to be respectful. Careful planning of activities and experiences can teach students much about respect.

Respecting Others

Have you ever noticed how people change when they are around someone they think is important? Usually, their voices and actions change to show how they esteem that person. A fun activity is to have one student pretend to be a sports figure or movie star and another student pretend to be the school secretary. Let the other students interact with the two and compare the way they treat the important person to the way they would treat an average member of society. Are they more smiling, polite, accommodating or helpful with one over the other? Make a list of all the people they come in contact with on a daily basis that deserve to be treated with respect such as parents, siblings, classmates, a bus driver and others. Stress to the middle school students that everyone has a right to be treated with respect, and that treating people the way you would like to be treated really does work.

Respecting Belongings

What we value the most we often respect the most. Ask any child how he would treat a brand new, state-of-the-art gaming system if he were to get one for making all A's. Most would treat it with care, only letting certain people touch it, and definitely would not throw it around. But the same children do not always really respect the things they already have or the things others have. One of the best ways for students to appreciate and value what they have is to visit people less fortunate. A trip to a homeless shelter to pass out canned foods can make most kids thankful for their bagged lunch from home. Having a police officer deliver a talk about the consequences of vandalism and theft also let students know that respecting property is a serious issue.

Respecting Yourself

Many middle school students struggle with self-esteem issues because of the awkwardness of puberty. Poor self esteem can be compounded with the fact that many kids from disadvantage homes really do not see much good in their lives. They need help in learning to respect themselves. The best activity for learning self-respect is to help students set personal goals and reach them. A two-way journal between the student with low self-esteem and teacher or parent can help identify realistic goals and be a tool for giving positive feedback and encouragement. Just knowing someone believes in them can make a difference in how a middle school student learns about respect.

Located on the mid north of NSW Australia, Forster is a great place to stop if you want to get out of Sydney and see some of the other things Australia has to offer. Forster is about 200 miles north of Sydney and is a popular holiday spot for Australians but it is often missed by international tourists.

Being originally from Sydney I have often been in the centre of Sydney and noticed that as soon as many tourists arrive in Sydney they leave. They go on tours to the Blue Mountains or the Hunter Valley and many get a car and drive. When you look at a map it's difficult to decide where to stop and what places are worth the turn off from the highway. My husband and I owned the ice cream parlor in the main street of Forster for many years and, while we got some overseas tourists, it is apparent that just go to the places promoted in the brochures, and who can blame them as they have limited information about the places in between.

The Forster Tuncurry area, which is two towns separated by a bridge which covers one of the most beautiful clear blue waterways you've ever seen, has a population of about 20,000 people. It has everything you could possibly want in a coastal holiday destination. Beautiful beaches, accommodation ranging from camping to five star apartments - something to suit everyone. There are food choices ranging from do it yourself BBQ facilities to top class restaurants. It's not quite as full on as other more touristy spots but it's more of a real Australian experience than many of the places in the tourist guides.

As well as being situated on the coast Forster is also on Wallis Lake which opens up a whole range of wonderful activities like kayaking and lake fishing, not to mention safe accessible swimming and water skiing. There are loads of walks ranging from long bush walks to pleasant coastal strolls. Anyone who's into fishing, diving or surfing won't be disappointed. There are a couple of great golf courses also. You can usually see dolphins off the break wall and when the season is right whale watching tours are popular.

In the Australian summer vacation period from late December to late January the place is packed with families having their ritualistic holiday that they wait for all year and at other times it's a pretty calm place that just goes about its business. The easiest way to get there is by car but you can also get a Greyhound bus from Sydney or a train to Newcastle then a bus which is a good way to see a bit of the country on the way.

The accommodation and eateries are situated pretty centrally so if you don't have a car most things are accessible on foot. There is a pretty good local bus service if you need to go anywhere else. The centralized nature of it is one of the things that many people say is it's best asset as you can drive there then leave the car parked for most of your stay which is really a contrast to the way most live their lives in the city these days and really gives people a chance to turn off.

Its possible to cruise for free and its not as hard as you might think. Gather up a group of your friends and family and you can earn free passage and group benefits. Just reserve eight or more staterooms on one sailing and youve got a group!

Most cruise lines define a group cruise as a minimum of 16 people occupying eight cabins. The 16th person (which could be you, the tour conductor) cruises free. Tour conductors work with a travel agency to make all the travel and onboard arrangements. Cruise Lines only award the value of the cruise fare only. Port charges, taxes and government fees are not free and must be paid by everyone in the group, including the Tour conductor. All you really need is a group willing to travel together and an excuse to go such as a family reunion, birthday, anniversary, wedding, college reunion, church groups, friends or just to have fun and you are on your way to cruising for free.

Getting a free fare is one thing. Getting a free cabin is something else altogether. For that you need to book twice as many people and cabins. Sixteen people means the 16th person cruises free; 16 cabins means the 16th cabin is free.

Some cruise lines also offer special perks available only to group cruisers. Amenities can include such things as private hosted cocktail parties, cabin upgrades and shipboard credits.

Each cruise line has its own group leader policy and they may vary depending upon the cruise lines guidelines.
